Prevette December 2015 Update – A Prayer of Thanksgiving during Advent

Prevette December Update
A Prayer of Thanksgiving during Advent 2015

It is now early December, we are experiencing very long nights and short days here in the UK as winter settles over our leafless trees and soggy landscape. Despite the grey, it is the first week of Advent in the Christian liturgical calendar, a season of expectation as we anticipate the coming of Jesus Christ.
The word “Advent” is derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming,” which is a translation of the Greek word parousia.  In early Christian history, believers celebrated Advent, but the “coming” they had in mind was not Christ’s first coming in the manger in Bethlehem, but his second coming in the clouds as the judge of the world. It was not until the Middle Ages that the Advent season was explicitly linked to Christ’s first coming at Christmas. For more on the history of Advent see this link “What is Advent”.

Ky was asked to lead a time of intercessory prayer in one of our local churches last Sunday and we wanted to share her prayer with you as a way of joining together in this season that leads us up to Christmas.
A Prayer of Intercession – First Sunday of Advent, 2015
Dearest Lord Jesus,

As I began the drafting of this intercession it was Thanksgiving Day in my homeland.  I thought about my early days of secure family life, mandatory education and ample provision.  I thought of the people I have loved and I gave You thanks. Most likely, there are many reading these words who can remember similar blessings and give thanks for same such provisions.

For blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe…

In sharp contrast to personal memories, the media brings us current news–none of it seems good!   The plight of immigrants and refugees, many of them children, staggers into our sitting rooms with the evening news.   The shocking tragedies of terrorism cause us to tremble in anger and fear before our computer screens or other streaming devices.

I confess to feeling uneasy about my good fortune.  There is an aching awareness of the pain so many in the world are undergoing.  What shall we do?  How can we help?  Where do we turn? Help us to act rightly, Lord, help us to pray.  Oh, Lord, have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy.

For blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe…

We pray that where there is volatility, uncertainty and complexity Your Spirit will be huge with waves of wisdom, peace and love.  Where there is anger and fear in others, and in ourselves, please sow Your gifts of compassion and courage.  Make us instruments of Your Peace, dear Lord, and ambassadors of Your Kingdom.

We look to You for miracles of transformation in human hearts, and we ask that you begin with our own.  Search us and see if there be any wicked way in us.  Help us to recognize those areas where we harbor resistance and denial.  Enable us to pray, “I believe, Lord, help my unbelief.”

For blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe…

We are individuals alone as well as joined together in small groups related to family, work, and interests…
We are Your church engaged with society and culture at large.
As nations and interconnected global components we affect political, corporate and religious behavior…

In short, we are members of humanity and caretakers of creation.
And as believers, we watch for the flow of your Spirit in the days of man and we seek the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Come to us as You choose to…
As living water, blowing wind, descending flame or alighting dove…
We desire and honor Your presence in our world.
Maranantha.  Come, Lord Jesus.  We give you thanks.

For blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe…  Amen

Update on Bill’s health and return to ministry

We offer our deepest thanks and gratitude to all who prayed for Bill’s recovery following his two knee surgeries in August and September. As you might recall, Bill had his left knee replacement implants removed due to an infection and had a number of complications following that procedure. The titanium implants were put back in the knee on September 16th and rehabilitation began in early October.

The photo was made around the middle of October and we are happy to report that Bill continues to make progress on the recovery and rehab. We were cleared for long distance air travel in early November and made a three week trip to the USA for ministry at a few of our supporting churches and connections with Northwest and Vanguard Universities. We are now back in Oxford and have resumed full time work with the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies.  We anticipate a ‘healthy Christmas’ and trust that this will be a wonderful holiday for you and yours.

May the Lord of mercy and power, healing and love be with each of you as 2015 comes to an end and 2016 peeps over the horizon.  May we continue to hope, trust and act in faith until His coming.  Marantha!  Come Lord Jesus!
